Adopt-a-Highway is a free program for the public to volunteer to clean up a 1.4-mile stretch of local state highway. Cleanups are conducted monthly and reported to California DOT. ASCENDtials has adopted over 8 highways and ramps including the 75 highway on Pomona Avenue on Coronado island and the 125 highway at Quarry and Elketon. We will provide safety equipment, trash grabbers, and bags for the day of the cleanups for all volunteers.
Our volunteers are scheduled once they book the day for the service, which will be available below via our scheduling service and through Eventbrite. If you’d like to book the entire cleanup for your group, please reach out by email at [email protected] a few weeks before the actual cleanup to reserve your space. Please Note!
- Please watch the safety video below before all cleanups take place.
- All volunteers will be given their own personal safety vests, googles, gloves, trash grabbers, and bags.
- No more than 12 volunteers are allowed to signup for a single cleanup event.
- Volunteers may clean up as often as they like, there’s no cap on the number of times you clean up the highway.
- Volunteers can request Letters of Appreciation once cleanup complete
- Volunteers can sign up for group cleanups

Coronado Highway 75 N & S
Details:
The cleanups are held monthly on Saturdays in front of Bluewater Boathouse, at 9:15 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. (PST) . Please check the time for your event!
All cleanups will be held at Coronado Island along Highway 75, both north and southbound along the sidewalk next to the highway.
All volunteers will receive a brief orientation before the cleanup begins.

Parking is available at the Bluewater Boathouse and along both sides of the highway. We will meet on the North side, in front of the restaurant parking lot, and walk down south until we get to Tulagi, at the base, and go back up the northbound side ending at the intersection across from the restaurant. .
Elketon/Quarry Highway 125 N
Details:
The cleanups are held monthly on the fourth Saturday of each month, meeting at the Quarry Self Storage at 9:15 a.m. (PST).
All cleanups will be held at Elketon/Quarry along Highway 125, northbound along the highway between 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. (PST).
All volunteers will receive a brief orientation before the cleanup begins.

Details:
The cleanups are held monthly on Saturday, meeting at the Mission Bay Beach Club at 12:15 p.m. (PST), on the first and third Sunday of the month.
All cleanups will be held at the ramps at Clairemont Street near the Mission Bay Beach Club along Highway 5, southbound along the highway between 12:15 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. (PST) on July 7, and 4:15-5:30 p.m. (PST) on August 4, and September 1.
All volunteers will receive a brief orientation before the clean up begins.

Safety and Training
Before each cleanup, the supervisor on site will go over a brief orientation with you. Here are some additional tips to follow when out on the highway.
- When picking up debris, especially large and awkward items, volunteers should use proper lifting techniques to minimize personal injury chances.
- Volunteers who discover containers that contain unidentifiable contents should report the information to the onsite coordinator. Volunteers should not move such materials unless it is determined to be non-hazardous.
- Personal protective clothing equipment should be used when picking trash.
Special Precautions
Usually, the safest, most efficient method to pick up litter is for workers to face oncoming traffic as they work. Be aware that roadway litter or trash may contain glass and other biohazard materials. Extreme care should be exercised so trash bags do not brush against anyone or rupture while loading.
